Farm News: Cranberries Respond To HeatcommentsPosted: 05.25.2010
Across Wisconsin, most farmers appear pretty comfortable with where they’re at with spring planting tasks – and with the weather they’re dealing with.
As of Sunday, Wisconsin ag officials say the state has 89 percent of the corn planted and 51 percent has already emerged. That’s 11 percentage points ahead of the five year average – so Wisconsin growers have been busy!
It’s the same situation with soybeans. Wisconsin has 53 percent of that crop planted – a 24 percent jump in one weeks time.
Small grains look good – providing the moisture keeps appearing from time to time. Even specialty crops like cranberries have been enjoying the heat – with new buds showing up.
First crop hay has been cut on at least 13 percent of fields – and vegetable progress in the central sands is coming along nicely, but also requiring early use of irrigation lines too.
Not everything was rosey though. In Chippewa County there were reports of losses to fruit blossoms – and some strawberry production was lost because of frost earlier.
Trempealeau County reported some damage to apples and grapes because of the earlier frost.
