Farm News: Arcadia Youth Wins Essay Contest

Greg Whalen, a fourth-grade school student from Arcadia, is the statewide winner of the Agriculture in the Classroom’s essay contest. Greg is the son Kevin and Marilyn Whalen. Mrs. Leanne Haines is Greg’s fourth grade teacher at Holy Family Catholic School, Arcadia, in Trempealeau County. The essay contest is sponsored by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board/Wisconsin Dairy Council, We Energies and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation.

 
For the essay contest, students were asked to write a 100 to 300 word essay with the theme, “The machines that make Wisconsin agriculture work.” Each district winner will receive a certificate, prizes, educational resources for their teacher and a classroom presentation and lesson on Wisconsin agriculture. A total of 1,333 Wisconsin students wrote essays for the competition.
 
The finalists from each of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau’s nine membership districts include:
 
  • District 1- Justin Ehrhart, 4th grade, Woodfield Elementary, Waterford (Racine County)
 
  • District 2- Garrett Revels, 5th grade, Clinton Middle School, Clinton (Rock County)
 
  • District 3- Derek Gardner, 4th grade, Hillsboro Elementary, Hillsboro (Vernon County)
 
  • District 4 and State Winner- Greg Whalen, 4th grade, Holy Family Catholic School, Arcadia (Trempealeau County)
 
  • District 5- Walker Shore, 5th grade, Wonewoc Center Elementary, Wonewoc (Juneau County)
 
  • District 6- Hunter Schamburek, 5th grade, Reedsville Elementary School, Reedsville (Manitowoc County)
 
  • District 7- Katie Ann Sievert, 4th grade, Bonduel Elementary School, Bonduel (Shawano County)
 
  • District 8- Adam Dums, 4th grade, Rib Lake Elementary School, Rib Lake (Taylor County)
 
  • District 9- Collin Schone, 4th grade, Glenwood City Elementary, Glenwood City (St. Croix County)
