Campers in state parks and forests will
have to gather firewood from nearby under new rules that go into
effect next week.

Beginning June 1, any firewood brought onto state lands must be
gathered or purchased within 25 miles. Firewood from
state-certified vendors who treat the wood for pests and diseases
will be exempt.

Previously, campers could bring firewood onto state lands from
up to 50 miles away.

State wildlife officials say the tighter limit offers better
protection against the spread of diseases and invasive species such
as the emerald ash borer.
