Farm News: Prices In Wisconsin - There's A Split

Prices in Wisconsin for corn, soybeans, oats, and potatoes are expected to decrease from April to May. On the other hand, prices for milk, steers and heifers, beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter, and calves are expected to increase during the same period.

As of mid-May, the average price Wisconsin farmers received for corn was $3.35 per bushel, 2 cents below April and 53 cents below May 2009. Nationwide, corn prices averaged $3.41 per bushel in mid-May, down 55 cents from May of last year.

Wisconsin soybeans decreased 23 cents per bushel from April, for an average of $9.30 per bushel in mid-May. This is $1.20 below May of last year. U.S. soybeans sold for $9.28 per bushel in mid-May, down $1.42 from the May 2009 price of $10.70 per bushel.

Oat prices in Wisconsin averaged $1.95 per bushel in mid-May, down 12 cents from April and 14 cents from May 2009. Nation-ally, oat prices were $2.04 per bushel, down 60 cents from the May 2009 price of $2.64 per bushel.

As of mid-May, alfalfa hay in Wisconsin sold for an average price of $120.00 per ton, up $5.00 from April. The average price for other hay types, at $90.00 per ton, is also up $5.00 from April.

Wisconsin steer and heifer prices averaged $92.20 per hundred-weight (cwt.) in mid-May, $2.20 above April. Prices for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter also increased $2.20 per cwt. from April, to $59.00 in mid-May. Calf prices in mid-May were $145.00 per cwt., up $1.00 from April.

At the U.S. level, steer and heifer prices in mid-May were $13.30 per cwt. above May 2009, at $101.00. Prices for beef cows and cull dairy cows sold for slaughter, at an average of $59.50 per cwt., were up $10.70 from May of last year. Calf prices, at $123.00 per cwt., were up $12.00 from May 2009.
