Farm News: Heat Could Accelerate Berry Season

Pickers are already showing up at the Bures Berry patch in Barneveld - and Ed and Kathy Bures hope there's more on the way.

Talking with Pam Jahnke on Wednesday, Ed Bures said that he's not as concerned about the wet weather south central Wisconsin has been experiencing as he is the upcoming heat.  "People just aren't comfortable picking in the heat and that can diminish the number of berries that are picked."

Bures said that there's always the option of placing an order with your local patch and having them pick the fruit for you - but the personal experience on harvesting the fruit yourself is also rewarding.  Bures said his goal is to make the picking experience a family event.  In 2010, Bures Berry Patch features shades for youngsters that may come with their parents.  There's beverages for purchase and some additional farm produce that visitors can buy too.

Bures is a regular guest each Wednesday morning at 5:45 a.m. for berry updates through the season.  Bures said he's optimistic that he'll still have berries available through the first week of July!  Find a local berry patch near you at www.wiberries.org or visit the Bures Berry Patch web location at www.buresberrypatch.com
