Farm News: National Milk Makes Changes

The National Milk Producers Federation has made a few changes in their board line up - but they stand firm on the direction they want dairy policy to go.

This week during their board meeting, NMPF voted overwhelmingly to support a package of concepts to reform dairy policy.  The package is being called "Foundation for the Future". Some of the provisions in the package inlcude:  transitioning the existing safety nets of the Dairy Product Price Support and Milk Income Loss Contract programs into a new Dairy Producer Margin Protection Program to guard against periods of severe financial pressures; establishing a Dairy Market Stabilization Program to help address periodic imbalances in milk production and demand; and reforming the Federal Milk Marketing Order program.

Kozak said they'll be making an industry-wide effort to educate the dairy producer community as well as policymakers about the "Foundation for the Future".

There were also a few changes on board leadership.  John Underwood was elected the Third Vice Chairman for NMPF.  He's the President and CEO of the Northwest Dairy Association in Seattle and served on the board prior to being elected as an officer. The new board also includes:  Mickey Childers of Somerville, AL representing Dairy Farmers of America; Dan Senestraro of Johnson, KS also representing DFA; and Jim Werkhoven of Monroe, WA representing the Northwest Dairy Association.
