Farm News: Crops Showing Stress Of Too Much RaincommentsPosted: 06.22.2010
Non-stop rain is starting to create signs of stress on Wisconsin's corn crop. The latest update from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service shows that average corn height is around 18 inches tall - so knee high by the fourth of July shouldn't be a problem. However, the wet, low lying areas of fields are now stressing corn. Field reporters say not only is the plant fading color-wise, the plants health and vigor are waning. Some county reporters also noted that slugs were damaging corn and soybean fields. The other crop that's been challenged by the wet weather is Wisconsin's hay crop. 78 percent of the first cutting of hay was in as of Sunday - but some growers say they're struggling to finish up. In some areas of East Central Wisconsin, weather has been so poor that first cutting hay was chopped back onto farm fields without any harvesting at all. Cranberries were in bloom and honeybee hives were being trucked into bogs to help with pollination.
