Farm News: UW-Madison Student Named To AFA TeamcommentsPosted: 06.30.2010
Katie Dogs, from Mayville, Wisconsin, has been selected as a member of the 2010 Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Student Advisory Team. Dogs, along with eight other college students from eight states, serves as an ambassador to the organization and will help to develop the strategic direction for the organization in 2010. In addition, members help to plan and deliver the AFA Leaders Conference.
Dogs, a Senior at the University of Wisconsin, Madison majoring in Agriculture and Life Science Communication, was selected for this elite leadership team based on her academic and leadership activities. Since April, Dogs has worked diligently with AFA staff and volunteers to plan the AFA Leaders Conference, Nov. 4-7, 2010, which is expected to draw more than 500 collegians from across the nation. This summer, Dogs is interning for Alltech, Inc.
“AFA is an organization designed to train passionate and committed students in agriculture to become better leaders who are ready to create a brighter future for the industry,” Dogs said. “During my time on the advisory team, I want to encourage more student participation from parts of the United States that don’t have as much representation within AFA. Increasing our student membership will allow greater diversity within our group and teach us about agricultural practices outside the areas that are familiar to us.”
In addition to planning the Leaders Conference, SAT members have the chance to interact with corporate and association leaders, be exposed to career opportunities, take on leadership roles, and receive media and communications training. Team members also receive the AFA Student Advisory Team academic scholarship.
“Each year, AFA is fortunate to have men and women seek the opportunity to serve as student advisors and each year, the team gets stronger,” said Russ Weathers, AFA President/CEO. “The 2010 team promises to set a new standard of leadership.”
AFA’s mission is to create partnerships that identify, encourage and support outstanding college men and women who are preparing for careers in the agriculture and food industry. Since 1996, AFA has provided leader and career development training to more than 5,500 college students and young professionals in agriculture.
