The Wisconsin State Journal is reporting that Arthur Lloyd Pope, a longtime UW-Madison expert in sheep production died on Monday at 89.

Pope spent 43 years at the university teaching and conducting research in the Department of Meat and Animal Science and has a park named in his honor.

In 2000, the town of Middleton and Pope worked out a deal whereby the town would buy Pope’s farm with the intention of turning it into a natural area permanently exempt from urban development.

The 105-acre park along Old Sauk Road includes walking trails, demonstration crops and signs that explain the area’s geology, and serves as a destination for school field trips.
