The Premier Fair, the Jefferson County Fair, in Jefferson, WI is running from July 7-11. This year the fair is celebrating their 158th year with new updates to the grounds, a new Agriculture Education Tent and many great entertainment events.

The newest attraction at the Jefferson County Fair is the Agriculture Education Tent. This is an event designed with a kids learning experience in mind. Mariah Hadler, of Busy Barns Adventure Farm, says that because fewer and fewer children are growing up with an agriculture background we the people involved in the agriculture industry need to be sure to educate them as often as possible. She says the Jefferson County Fair Board recognizes this and decided that an Agriculture Education Tent was another great way for them to educate children and adults about agriculture at the Jefferson County Fair. Inside the tent is a huge soybean box for children to play, dig, and build in. Also inside the tent is “Holly the Holstein” a cow that moo’s while children sit down on the stool to milk her. There is an agriculture product bean bag toss. In this game children have to throw the correct product into the correct source to win a prize. There also are animal shaped cutouts to take pictures with as well as agricultural coloring books, and much more.

This year the Great American Duck Race returned to the Jefferson County Fair.  Robert Duck, of Bosque Farms in New Mexico, chooses 16 members of the audience to release the ducks for the races. Upon release, the ducks race down a 16 ft water race track to the finish line. The duck that wins gets to move on to the final round. Robert Duck has about four to five race shows per day and each last about 20 minutes long. Duck says that the races are a huge educational opportunity. He says many different facts about Mallard Ducks throughout and in between the different races. Duck says what he enjoys most of racing ducks is seeing the emotion on the children’s faces the first time they get to be up close with a duck in their hands. He describes it as priceless. Duck travels to about 20 different events throughout the year and stays at each event for 2-17 days at a time. He says most of his time is spent in the Midwest, but he also spends time racing his ducks along the east coast.

The Jefferson County Fair includes entertainment for everyone. They have everything from cricket spitting contests, to auctions and conventions, to demolition derbies and tractor pulls, to concerts. Some artists coming in for the concerts include Uncle Kracker, Chris Young, Vanessa Carlton, and many more. For more information about the Jefferson County Fair visit www.jeffersoncountyfairpark.com/fair .
