Farm News: State Veggie Acres DowncommentsPosted: 07.13.2010 Processing acres of green peas, snap beans, sweet corn and cucumbers for pickles are expected to decrease in Wisconsin in 2010. Nationally, acres contracted for processing sweet corn, snap beans, green peas, and cucumbers for pickles, at 807,260, are down 10 percent from 2009. Contracted acres for snap bean production fell 2 percent to 195,359. Sweet corn decreased from 402,100 acres in 2009 to 348,900 acres in 2010. Cucumber for pickles acreage was down less than 1 percent to 86,510 acres, and green pea acres dropped 15 percent to 180,400.
In 2010, acres planted to onions in Wisconsin, at 2,000, was unchanged from the previous year. For the 2009 production year, Wisconsin produced 1 million hun-dredweight (cwt.) of onions. Shrinkage and loss for 2009 totaled 123,000 cwt. The state’s onions brought, on average, $10.80 per cwt., for a total of $9.47 mil-lion.
Wisconsin farmers expect to harvest 6,800 acres of fresh market sweet corn in 2010. This would be a de-crease of 200 acres when compared with 2009. Nation-ally, the number of acres harvested for fresh market sweet corn is predicted to increase from 93,800 acres in 2009 to 104,500 acres in 2010. |
