Farm News: Wet Weather Challenges Loggers

The wet summer is taking its toll on
loggers in Wisconsin's north woods.

Heavy rains in June and July have made logging roads nearly
unusable in some parts of the state.

Henry Schienebeck is with the Great Lakes Timber Professionals
Association. He says road conditions are making it hard for loggers
to get into the woods to cut trees.

The areas that have been hardest hit are those with heavy,
claylike soil such as Iron and Ashland counties. Loggers are having
better luck in areas like the Northern Highland American Legion
Forest Areas where the soil is more sandy.

Schienebeck tells Wisconsin Public Radio there's a bright side
for loggers. He says paper mills are so low on pulpwood inventory
that the market will be strong when the forests finally dry out.
