A popular auctioneer, and leader in pork production, will be posthumously inducted into the Wisconsin State Fair Hall of Farm on August 11th - appropriately, during the Jr Barrow Show.

Paul George, formerly of Evansville, will be inducted with family members there to witness the event.
Each year, Wisconsin Pork Association recognizes an outstanding individual who has demonstrated a long time commitment to the Wisconsin State Fair in the open or junior shows, and to developing a quality breeding program.
Paul George was a third generation Duroc Breeder. He grew up showing purebred Duroc breeding stock with George Bros. Farms of Evansville, WI. The first 12-15 years Paul and Barb were married, they showed pigs at the Wisconsin State Fair - many times with over 50 head - primarily Durocs.

He valued his state fair awards, especially the two years he got the premier sire award and when he had the grand champion barrow in open class in 1989. That barrow also sold in the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction.
Paul started farming on his own in 1977 with 11 sows and 84 acres. Paul and Barb owned 349 acres with two farms when he died a year ago. He operated a farrow to finish operation for many years. A few years ago he sold his farrowing crates to a young producer.
Paul was best known as an auctionee since 1967 after graduating from the Reisch Auction School in Des Moines, IA. He started working with his father at that time.   Paul did many pig auctions, especially in the later years.
His passion was working with the youth, helping them raise quality pigs and doing well in the show and sale rings. He served on the Rock County Fair board for over 20 years and was president for six. He chaired the Rock County Meat Animal Sale for many years and served as one of the auctioneers for 40 years. He also volunteered his time at the Dane, Walworth and Green County fair sales.
He served on the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction committee for state fair and sold at the sale for 36 years. He started a sale of champions in the swine barn early on. He promoted the sale with fair vendors and sent his family to gather those buyers right before the event. He felt very strongly about the youth exhibitors being recognized for breed champions and worked with the sale committee until he convinced them that this was valuable. The sale in the barn ended after they included more breed champions in the Governor’s sale. He was an advocate for swine producers and young people in the industry.
Paul and Barb have four children: JoDee Nifong, Minneapolis; Ryan, Janesville; Adam, Madison; and Anne, St. Paul. They also have two grandchildren, Jocelyn Nifong and Kaela George.
