Farm News: Day 2-Opening DaycommentsPosted: 08.05.2010 Feature by summer intern, Ashley Nimtz ![]() Waking up before the sun comes up is a daunting task that dairy exhibitors at the WI State Fair do every day. Without getting up early you cannot finish washing 54 animals and finish chores before breakfast and the opening of the Wisconsin State Fair.
Thursday was opening day at the fair and the dairy barns were busy as normal getting ready for the Holstein calves show and keeping their barns as clean as possible. Getting ready for the show is not easy though either. Keeping animals spotless, and feeding them at just the right time so that they look their absolute best for the show ring. As a herdsman, you are there for the entire show helping juniors set up their top lines, and making sure that the barn looks it’s best for the herdsmanship awards given out on the last day.
Then it was time for barn duty. Normally this is a two hour shift where you cleanup manure from the animals, brush them, water them, feed them, and make sure all are healthy. But For me this ended up being a 5 hour shift that ended just in time for me to milk my brothers and my cows for the show tomorrow afternoon. There were people everywhere. The barns were crowed with the public whom had some extremely good questions for us about our dairy cattle. Before I knew it, supper at the dorms had almost ended so I ran up to the cafeteria to eat. Then it was time to finish clipping my cow and take her for a walk to help calm her down a little bit before tomorrow’s show.
Tonight will be a night of not a lot of sleeping. I have to get up in the middle of the night to milk my cow once again for the show Friday afternoon. I will also have to be up to do chores in the morning before the sun is up. Then it will be a day full of helping others and friends, and showing dairy cattle.
