Farm News: All The Latest Research - Agronomy/Soil Field Day!!commentsPosted: 08.20.2010 Feature by summer intern, Ashley Nimtz
The annual Agronomy and Soils Science field day is coming up next week on Wednesday, August 25th with the first tour beginning at 8:30 am. It takes place at the Arlington Research Facility located just north of Madison off of Highway 51 north. This is a great event for all of those interested in the latest research being done in production agriculture.
Dick Wilkowski, Senior Scientist and Extension Soil Scientist explained that the day is set up with three tours. Each tour will be given at three different times. On the tour the participants will travel to the fields where the research is being completed and learn about various topics. A few topics being covered throughout the day include managing crop residue, cover crops, and soil formation on the soil science tour, crop rotation, soil testing, and manure management on the agronomy tour, and finally information about the Potato Leaf Hopper and volunteer weed control on the Pest management tour. At the conclusion of the morning tours will be a short lunch followed by two special events. The first being a presentation about managing tractor efficiency and saving fuel in tractors, and the second is a presentation by Dean Molly Jahn about “The Road Ahead” dealing with the college and the agriculture industry. There will also be many extension agents, and researchers available to answer all of your questions, including questions about the early harvest this year, and increased soil erosion.
This is a free event hosted by the UW-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Science and the UW Extension. Wilkowski says that rain or shine the event will continue. However if it rains they will move the presentations inside the facility. For more information about the Agronomy and Soil Science Field day check out their respective websites or find more information on the UW Extension website.
