Farm News: Going back to college...What is it like?commentsPosted: 08.20.2010 Feature by summer intern, Ashley Nimtz ![]() No matter how old you are, or how many years you have been going to college…there are always a few things that everyone has in common. We all have those questions lingering over us asking what am I looking forward to? What am I the most nervous about? Have I prepared myself enough? Will I be able to make it through my class and stay caught up? How different is it really going to be? And quite possibly the biggest question is will I be able to take advantage of the many opportunities that are given to me while away at college? These questions have many different answers depending how far along you are in your college career. Incoming freshman Stephanie Wyss is thinking about being able to keep up in class, and meeting lots of new people every day. Going to college is a huge step in a person’s life. She says her schedule will change immensely from working all day every day at her family farm throughout the summer to going to class and meeting new people everywhere she goes at college. Going to college as an incoming freshman is a huge adjustment for anyone. But what exactly makes it so different…Wyss says that you are on your own. You have to purchase everything you need for your dorm rooms beforehand including all of the many necessities that everyone needs. This is different from high school because then all of these item are at home. As a freshman she says what she is looking forward to the most is meeting all of the any new people every day.
All of these answers are different for a senior or a grad student. What are they thinking about? Shane Williams, a 2nd year grad student, says that he’s thinking about what he has to do next to take that next step in his life to find a job and start his career. Sally Turpin, a senior in college, has a similar answer. She is thinking about where she will be in nine months when she is graduated. But just how are they preparing themselves for this school year, both answered with an “I haven’t really.” They say that they have most of what they need and kind of know what to expect so they really aren’t worried about classes. Williams and Turpin both agreed that what they are most worried about is what they are go into be doing next when they are graduated and thrown out into the real world. Turpin is wondering will she be able to find a job or will she take another route and go back to school for her master’s degree.
Questions like these are common for any student going to college. The part that is different is there answer. This depends on how long they have been attending college so far.
