Farm emergencies may not happen every day, but when they do they are serious. It takes people who are specially trained to know what to do when to keep both the victim and themselves safe at all times. Dane, Rock and Green Counties are hosting a Public Safety Training for Farm Emergencies session on September 11th to do just this.

Nolan Andersen, UW Extension agent in Agriculture, explained that the goal is to help the emergency staff in these counties to know more of what to expect when heading out to a farm emergency. The topics covered in the session will be: anhydrous tanks, tractor rollovers/round bale entrapment, animal safety and confined spaces, machinery extraction, and the Beloit Tech Rescue. These topics seem to be what cause these counties the most problems. He says in the past the emergency staff were from a farm background and knew most of the information. Today more and more of the personnel are not from a farm background and need to be taught what to expect and what to do in these kinds of emergencies.

Anderson made sure to be clear that farmers don’t call for emergency help if a cow steps on their toe. If they call for emergency help something major happened.

For pre-registration for the training contact Randy Thompson with UW Extension in Rock County or for more information about the training contact your local extension agent. Pre-registration ends September 1st and space is limited so be sure to claim your seat in the Public Safety Training for Farm Emergencies.
