Farm News: High Water May Mean Fish Aren't Hungry

Wisconsin's hook-and-line lake sturgeon season is about to get under way - but water levels might mean they're not as hungry as anglers expect.

State Department of Natural Resources officials say it's
difficult to predict the prospects because water levels are so
high.

They say higher water levels can get fish moving. But the higher
levels are washing more food into the water, so sturgeon may not be
as hungry and interested in angler's baits.

Then there's the comfort of the anglers while they wait out the big fish.
Higher water levels have also contributed to a bumper crop of
mosquitoes that could make fishing from shore a nightmare. DNR
officials say anglers should pack plenty of bug repellant.

The season is set to open on Saturday and run through Sept. 30.
The season bag limit is one fish at least 60 inches long.
