Farm News: World Beef Expo Ramping Up Seminars

Beef producers, industry professionals and anyone interested in beef production are invited to attend the educational seminars presented at the 2010 World Beef Expo. The seminars at this year’s Expo will cover a variety of topics on nutrition, stockmanship and cattle handling, as well as virtual tours of two beef farms.

The 2010 Featured Presenter will be Dr. Ron Gill, Professor and Livestock Extension Specialist from Texas A&M University. He will present a live cattle handling demonstration entitled “Stockmanship and Stewardship.” Dr. Gill’s work in animal well-being and low-stress livestock handling has made him a sought after speaker throughout the country. He is heavily involved in promoting the concept of Effective Stockmanship focusing on improving livestock handling skills to reduce stress on livestock and increase efficiency of production.

The seminars will be held Friday, September 24th and Saturday, September 25th at the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, WI.

Sessions will include:

Friday, September 24th

·         10 -11am Virtual Farm Tour: Arndt Farm- Janesville, WI

·         12:30-1pm  Advanced Pasture Management- Rhonda Gildersleeve, UW-Extension State Grazing Specialist

·         3-4 pm Managing the Bunk for Performance and Profitability- Howard Blalock, Beef Feedlot Nutritionist, Quality Liquid Fee

·         6-8 pm Stockmanship and Stewardship: Ron Gill-Professor and Extension Livestock Specialist, Texas A & M University

Saturday, September 25th

·         10-11am Virtual Farm Tour: Adams Farm- Sandwich, IL

·         5:00-6:00 pm Cow Nutrition and Fetal Programming: Dr. Amy Radunz- UW Extension Beef Specialist

The seminars are sponsored by Quality Liquid Feeds, the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association, the Wisconsin Cattlewomen’s Association, UW-Extension and the Wisconsin Beef Council. The World Beef Expo is a world-class cattle show that also includes breed and prospect sales during the three day event.
