Farm News: Pumpkins And Squash Might Be SquishycommentsPosted: 09.08.2010 It all depends where the field is! State growers of the popular fall crop says that wet conditions are going to cost them some of their pumpkin and squash crop with rot and mildew. Traditional crops like corn and soybeans are speeding to maturity for the most part. The Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service reports that 15 percent of the corn crop is already "mature" - and 20 percent has already been chopped for corn silage - livestock feed. Reporters said that silage yields have been good to excellent! For growers that are waiting to harvest the ear of corn - via a combine - the schedule is advancing. In Trempealeau county, reporters said that ears were hanging down - an indication the crop is ready to go. Wisconsin soybeans are also coming along nicely. Some areas on south central Wisconsin are monitoring Suden Death Syndrome. 36 percent of soybean fields are switching from a growing season green - to a nearly mature yellow/gold color.
