Farm News: Dairy Goat Field Day Mid-Month

Posted: 09.08.2010

Dairy goat producers Mark and Colleen Hansen will host an educational field day for current and aspiring farmers at their farm on Sept. 18.

Sponsored by Glacierland RC&D and the Dairy Business Innovation Center, the field day will include a pasture walk and tour of the Hansen’s new milking parlor with "window view" for visitors. The Hansen farm is located at 16210 County Highway M, Cleveland, Wis.

Registration begins at 12 noon with a lunch featuring goat and beef stew prepared by a local chef, as well as goat cheeses and goat milk ice cream.  The afternoon program includes a farm tour with information on setting up paddocks, lanes, fencing and watering systems for managed intensive grazing of goats. The Hansens will also discuss an agro forestry project on the farm.

The Hansens were early adapters of intensified rotational grazing with dairy cows, farming for more than 20 years.  They liked the idea of working with goats and milked both dairy cows and dairy goats before transitioning entirely to dairy goats. After touring the farm’s retrofitted cow dairy facility, field day attendees are invited to stay and watch the evening goat milking through a large window in the milking parlor. The field day ends at 3 p.m.

There is no cost for the field day, but registration is required so that enough materials, lunches and bio-security boots are available.  To register, contact Jeanne Meier at 608-219-4081 or e-mail:  jeannemariemeier@gmail.com.
