Farm News: Weather Cuts Some Wine Production

The annual grape harvest got underway about 10 days early this year at Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac - thanks to a warm summer!

Based on an early spring bloom, Winemaker Philippe Coquard had expected the harvest would arrive early. As summer progressed though, Coquard also noticed that weather might nip some of the crops potential this year.

Similar to other agricultural crops, weather plays a critical role in when to harvest along with what is harvested. From spring on, Wollersheim’s 2010 growing season was fast paced. As Coquard notes, “with “well-watered” vines, the vegetation never stopped growing.” This kept the vineyard crew in continuous motion maintaining the winery’s 27 acre vineyard. Several rounds of hedge trimming and combing helped rid the vines of excess growth and opened them up to invaluable sunlight. Transitioning from vineyard grooming to harvest prep was seamless and once picking began winemaking was full speed ahead.

Harvest came and went in a flash. Pickers moved quickly from one field to the next. The final outcome varied. Coquard is very excited with the outcome of the wine from the steep slopes, while the flatter fields retained more water resulting in less concentration. Wollersheim’s 2010 estate-grown Wisconsin crop totaled 120 tons of fruit, which is down about 15% due to early spring frost. With quantity down and quality varied, Coquard is content to call it an average to good year.

The 2010 vintage can be tasted once the wines become available over the next year and a half. The first taste of the 2010 harvest, Wollersheim Ruby Nouveau 2010, is released on November 18.
