Farm News: Permits Submitted For 4,300 Cow DairycommentsPosted: 09.10.2010 Milk Source Holdings, Inc has submitted the required paperwork to begin the process of building at 4,300 cow dairy in the Grand Marsh area. The proposed dairy, titled "New Chester Dairy" - is projected to cost about $35 million and will employ about 40 people, offering health benefits and a 401K plan. The 3,000 page permit submitted by Milk Source is just the beginning of a lengthy process, but Ostrom said he believes they proved sound design in the plan. “It was a very thorough process but we have now completed this important first step,” Ostrom continued that they will likely have more than 30 permits and approvals that must be completed within the project.
The yearly local economic impact of the farm is estimated at approximately $15 million. An additional benefit to local growers is that each cow would produce the equivalent of 1.3 acres worth of organic fertilizer (manure) annually, which adheres to sandy soil better than chemical fertilizer. Milk Source says that means increasing crop yields and more effectively retaining moisture. There would be about 5,600 acres of fertilizer produced at the farm that could treat about 9 percent of the more than 60,000 farm acres within a 10-mile radius of the farm.
The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board estimates that each cow generates nearly $20,000 in economic benefit each year, so in the case of New Chester Dairy that would equate to about $85 million.
Ostrom said, “Our goal is to begin work on the dairy by the spring of 2011 and have it in operation by the fall of 2011.”
It will include:
• A cross-ventilated free stall barn with a cooling system to keep summer temperatures up to 15 degrees cooler • An 80-cow milking carousel • A commodity building • An operations building • Feed storage areas • A storm-water detention pond • A nutrient-storage lagoon that will be covered within three years • An elaborate sand and manure separation system To date, Milk Source Holdings operates four dairy farms in Wisconsin. Milk Source Genetics consists of 50 cows - Omro Dairy is a herd of 2,700, Tidy-View Dairy is located in Kaukauna at 6,800 animals and Rosendale Dairy in Pickett houses 8,000.
