Farm News: Harvest Schedule Advances

Despite cooler weather - Wisconsin farmers have already harvested 44 percent of this years corn silage!

The WIsconsin Ag Statistical Service said as of Sunday, 27 percent of the corn crop was already mature.  The corn silage harvest is already 24 percent ahead of where it was a year ago - and growers are relieved at the pace.   Yields on corn silage were also reported as being very good.

Soybeans are also advancing nicely.  66 percent of the crop has already turned to a yellowish brown - signaling maturity.  That mark is 30 points ahead of this time last year.  Growers are also noticing that pod fill on the plant is very good - some growers noting the crop looks larger then usual.

The cooler temperatures statewide did help with the potatoe harvest - and apple picking is active in most growing regions.

As growers move through their harvest - where corn silage has been chopped, manure spreading has started.  Where tillage has been completed - now growers are working on planting fall seeded crops like rye and wheat.
