Students in Pittsville know how busy the fall harvest can get - and they're ready to jump in and make it even busier!
The 2010 "Spalsh of Red Cranberry Tours" are ready to commence - thanks to students and volunteers connected with the Pittsville FFA chapter. Bill Urban, ag instructor and coordinator for the tours, says they're taking reservations for the educational experiences starting October 1st.
Part of the uniqueness of the Pittsville tour is the chance to physically enter a cranberry bog. Visitors really see where the red fruit Wisconsin's famous for is produced. The tour also includes the following: touring a current marsh under construction, new beds not yet in production, producing beds with the tourists given the opportunity to pick fresh fruit from the vine, as well as observing the harvesting, testing, cleaning and freezing of the berries.
Finally guests return to the school and enjoy some tasty cranberry treats prepared by the Foods Class at Pittsville High School.
The charge for the tour is $25 per person with discounts for large groups. School tours are also available at $3 per student, including a cranberry treat.
These tours are only available through registration though. Call 715-884-6412. The tours run from approximately 9:30 til noon, with lunch at 11:30.
