Farm News: Didion Green Expo Big DrawcommentsPosted: 09.20.2010 Didion Ethanol, LLC (Didion) hosted more than an estimated 800 people Thursday at the Didion Green Energy Expo. Attendees were from as far as Nevada, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida and throughout Wisconsin. Attendees were able to take a tour of Didion Ethanol and learn about the ethanol process. Adam Lemmenes, Plant Manager, was on hand at the end of the tour to discuss any questions they had about the process. Visitors inquired about many different facets of the plant, including the impact of the new zero water discharge system installed in the plant. Lemmenes told those gathered that, “Yes, it provided some challenges in the plant, but it has reduced the well water usage by 145,000 gallons per day.” Tour attendees also saw how Didion was able to reduce their energy consumption over the past years through the implementation of various projects that saved enough energy to power 828 homes per year. That is equivalent to taking 1,775 cars off the road - eliminating 20 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Visitors also saw new energy savings projects that will reduce energy consumption by 25%. Once all the work's complete - Didion will be able to create 1.5 units of ethanol power for every unit of energy input.
Wisconsin Corn Growers Association distributed t-shirts to attendees to mark the first Didion Green Energy Expo. Exhibitors and panel members discussed one major item in the ethanol industry - the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit (VEETC) incentive and ethanol blending. The VEETC incentive for gasoline distribution companies is set to expire this year. Although the incentive is not a direct tax benefits for the ethanol producers or corn growers, it has strong implications for both groups if not passed.
The Didion program began at 6pm with the American Legion performing a flag ceremony and a three-gun salute to pay tribute to the first flag raising in front of Didion Ethanol. Chad Carter, Controller, shared Didion’s history and the future outlook of the company to attendees. Alice in Dairyland, Christine Lindner, told spectators of the importance of the agricultural and ethanol industries for the State of Wisconsin and the Farmers Feed Us program. John and Dow Didion presented a sign to the Town of Courtland to celebrate their recent passing of the State’s 25x25 resolution through their pledge with the Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence’s Energy Independent Community Partnership program.
John and Dow Didion presented a $25,000 check to the Old Mill Foundation for the organization to continue their mission of giving back to the Cambria-Friesland and Courtland communities. The Old Mill Foundation www.oldmillfoundation.com, in turn presented a $5,300 donation for a fence around the softball field benefitting the Little League and Cambria-Friesland Softball Clubs. Old Mill Foundation lifetime membership information may be found on their website.
Rita Burmania of Cambria won the Exhibitor Sticker Card contest by visiting at least five exhibitors at the Expo. Rita won four tickets to the Farm Aid concert on October 2nd held at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
