They're coming from as far away as Texas to compete at the 2010 World Beef Expo Friday through Sunday at State Fair Park in West Allis.

Jeff Swenson, Livestock Specialist with the WI Department of Agriculture, says right now there are 750 entries for the show - but more could arrive before judging begins on Friday.  Swenson said there's been some changes to WBE to try and incorporate more beef producers from all types of breeds.  This year, there are two new categories in the open show - a Commercial Heifer division and an Open Registered Cattle division.  Swenson tells Pam Jahnke that they added these categories to allow exhibitors that may have a more unique breed a chance to show.  "Sometimes breeds just don't have enough cattle to pull together their own class, or their own show.  This allows them a chance to get involved, and get some attention."

This year Swenson tells Farm Report Radio that they Murray Grey breed will get special attention with their national show taking place during World Beef Expo.  There should also be ample attention in the annual breed sales that take place at the park.  "We've got about 60 head of cattle commited to the sales this year.  We've got the Hereford and Angus breed sales, plus the "All Breed" sale, and then there should be a big group in the Prospect sale too."

Swenson says the Prospect sale is a good spot for industry leaders to look for the next season's show cattle.  With beef prices on the rebound, Swenson says everyone's generally coming to the show in good spirits.
